Ampacity is the maximum current, in amperes, that a conductor or device can carry continuously without exceeding its temperature rating or causing damage to a device. After you exceed a conductor's or device's ampacity, physical damage or a progressive deterioration can occur. Ampacity can also be referred to as current rating or current-carrying capacity.
