Your hard drive is logically divided into multiple partitions. You may have a C: and D: drive that are on one physical drive, but are two different sections of that hard drive. By partitioning your drive you have a couple benefits. One being you can use the second drive as a backup to the other. If anything gets corrupt with the operating system on the C: drive, the drive you use for everyday operations, you can still have everything backed up on the D: drive.
