The third version of HTTP is HTTP/1.1. The HTTP/1.1 specification was originally defined in RFC2068 (162 pages) in January of 1997. The RFC2068 document would later be obsoleted by RFC2616 (176 pages) in June 1999. RFC2616 improves and updates the HTTP/1.1 specification. RFC2616 is currently a proposed standard (categorized RFCs; all RFCs). HTTP has never been standardized.

The HTTP/1.1 specification was written to account for any possible future uses.
