A nonmetallic (NM) cable contains three or more wires insulated inside a plastic sheathing. Usually one white neutral wire, one or two hot wires typically black and red, and a ground wire which is a bare copper wire or a green insulated wire. Older NM cables may have cloth sheathing and no ground wire.
