Most cables are protected by plastic sheathing and the wires inside the cable are protected by plastic insulation. Before you are able to splice or terminate the wires or cable, you must first remove the plastic sheathing and insulation. To do this you will most likely use a tool called a wire stripper. If you don't have a wire stripper available, you can use a knife. When stripping the insulation off of the wire, the most important thing to remember is to not damage the conductor, usually a copper wire. If you are using a knife, cut the insulation at an angle. This reduces the chances of cutting the conductor.
