The service panels that hold your circuit breakers or fuses are usually located in a utility area. In houses, the service panel is usually located in the basement. If you live in a house without a basement, than the service panel may be in your garage. If you live in a condo or apartment with no basement or garage, than the service panel is usually located in your laundry room or a closet.

When service panels are installed they put many factors into consideration. The most important thing is that it is not located in a high traffic area. Having them tucked away in a low traffic area is safer for a couple of reasons. Any kind of liquid coming into contact with the service panel can be dangerous and over exposure to electromagnetic fields is not healthy. Also, keeping children away from service panels is obviously important.

Keeping service panels in low traffic areas also minimizes the chances that it will get damaged. Fixing service panels requires calling a professional electrician and can be very costly.

Once located, remember to keep a clear path to the service panel. The next time you many need to get to it, it may be pitch black. Never lean anything on the service panel as this may also be a fire hazard.
