When doing electrical work, sometimes it's best to turn off power to the whole house. This can be done through your service panel, but how it's done depends on if your service panel uses fuses or circuit breakers.

If you're using circuit breakers, you will want to flip the main breaker. This is the double-width switch that is located at the top of the service panel. If you're using a fuse box, you will have to pull out the main fuse block. The main fuse block looks like a rectangular box with a vertical handle. It should be located at the top of the service panel. Grab the handle and pull straight out. Be cautious of touching metal on the main fuse block, it may be hot.
