In electrical terminology, the term box refers to a device used to contain wiring connections. According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), all wire splices or connections must be contained entirely in a covered electrical box. A box can be a metal or plastic container with openings for cables. All electrical connections must be made inside a code-approved electrical box.
