The HTTP TRACE request method is a form of ping request. It echoes back the received request so that a client can see if any changes have been made to any intermediate servers. These intermediary servers can also be referred to as proxy hops. The HTTP TRACE request method is not used by web browsers. It is used primarily for security testing. This method reveals information about HTTP servers on a remote network and the HTTP server architecture on that network (the order of the hops). This method is usually disabled by network administrators for security purposes.
