Transformers are devices that "step up" voltage or "step down" voltage. Transformers are essential for high-voltage electric power transmission, which makes long-distance transmission economically practical. In home wiring applications, a transformer will reduce the voltage in a circuit from 120 volts to between 2 and 24 volts. Transformers are often used by doorbells, thermostats and low-voltage lights.
