What are Compiled Languages?

Compiled languages are programming languages that must be translated into a lower level machine language (called machine code). When the program/file gets translated to machine code, it is often referred to as an "executable". This translation is performed by a compiler which generates machine code from the source code. By comparison, interpreted languages are not compiled. They perform step-by-step execution of source code, where no pre-runtime translation takes place.
