What Are Supercomputers?
A supercomputer is a custom built computer with the intentions of performing a certain task. Supercomputers are the most expensive type of computer. They can cost anywhere from thousands of dollars to millions of dollars.
When constructing a supercomputer computer scientists typically connect multiple high performance computers together. They work in parallel as a single system. The best known supercomputers are built by Cray Supercomputers and IBM. IBM just recently built a supercomputer named Watson that won a real live game of Jeopardy.
Supercomputers are usually built by large organizations or government entities to simulate some type of environment or automate some task to save on time and labor. As technology progresses supercomputers will become more common. The goal of large organizations to save on time and money will always be there and supercomputers are a way to solve these problems.
