Ajax itself is not a programming language. It is instead a way to use JavaScript to update webpages without having to reload the page. Google Maps is one example of an application that makes use of Ajax. Google Maps uses this technique to let you move around a map without forcing you to load a new webpage. Ajax allows you to talk to the web server, retrieve information from the server, and update the webpage without the user needing to refresh.
