Webmail is the term used to describe getting your emails through your web browser (ex. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc). The advantage of webmail is that you can access your email from any computer or device (ex. Smartphone) that has Internet access. If you have a Gmail, AOL, or Yahoo email account, than you are already using webmail. Those are just a few of many webmail account options out there. Most of the time these are free accounts to setup. The alternative to webmail would be your "email client" installed locally (locally referring to the computer you're currently using) on your computer.
