Who Invented the First Battery?

Around the year 1800, Allessandro Volta invented the first battery. He was experimenting with different metal discs in contact with a container of chemicals. He was soon able to get a charge to flow, and keep flowing, through a conducting wire. Small in size, weak in energy, and trivial in practical use, but it was a start for things to come.
