Been feeling down lately and you don't know why? Do you feel sad or hopeless and you simply cannot pinpoint the source of your feelings? Believe it or not, the moody blues could be contributed to your diet. I am sure you've heard of all of the positive effects of the so-called super foods such as berries, fish, and spinach, but are you aware of some of the negative effects of other foods? Processed and preserved foods can have an effect on your mood and studies have suggested that they can cause feelings of depression. The following foods, if consumed as part of a regular diet, have been shown to cause feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and overall depression.

  1. French fries, potato chips, essentially anything that is fried.
  2. Sugary foods such as cookies and candy.
  3. Refined grains which are grains that have been significantly altered from their natural state. They include white rice, most cereals, and white flour.
  4. Beer.

What recent research indicates is that not only does food have an impact on your overall physical health but it has an impact on your mental health as well. It is of no surprise that diet contributes to the acquisition of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and weight gain but to think that it also affects your mood is incredible. This means that you can naturally control the way you feel by modifying your diet. The next time you find yourself melancholy for no reason take an inventory of your diet regime. Try to swap that burger for a salad loaded with fresh vegetables or that bottle of beer for a glass of red wine and you may find yourself not only looking better on the outside but feeling better on the inside.
